WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Brookings Institution and Sabanci University are pleased to announce the topic for the "Sakip Sabanci International Research Award" for this year. The topic for the 2007 Sakip Sabanci International Research Award is "Perceptions of Ottoman Legacy in the Balkans and the Middle East." The deadline for submissions for the 2007 Award is March 2, 2007.
Applicants are urged to submit essay-length studies of original research (involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections or qualitative data collection) which examine and analyze perceptions regarding the historical, cultural, economic and political legacy of the Ottoman rule in the Balkans and the Middle East. The selection committee will give priority to those submissions which have the potential for publication in one of the leading academic journals.
The Sakip Sabanci International Research Award includes $20,000 for the first prize, $10,000 for the second and $5,000 for the third. An independent, international jury, whose members will be announced in autumn 2007, will select the prize winners. The award is jointly administered by the Brookings Institution and the Trustees of Sabanci University, Istanbul.
Conditions for the competition are:
-- All entries must be new and original works, not published previously in any form.
-- Essays must be approximately 7,000 to 8,000 words.
-- Essays must be submitted in English only by means of e-mail in the form of an attached Word document to the following two addresses simultaneously: sabanciaward@sabanciuniv.edu and amoffatt@brookings.edu

About the Sakip Sabanci International Research Award
The Sakip Sabanci International Research Award is named in honor of the late Mr. Sakip Sabanci, a prominent Turkish philanthropist and business leader. The corporation that he headed, Sabanci Holding, is one of the world's largest family owned businesses. Sabanci is also the founder of Istanbul's Sabanci University, one of Turkey's leading academic institutions.
The award is designed to promote fresh thinking, new ideas and original research relevant to Turkish studies conducted in any field of the humanities and social sciences. It is jointly administered by the Brookings Institution Washington D.C., and the Trustees of Sabanci University and the prize winners are selected by an independent, international jury.
The winner of the 2006 Sakip Sabanci Award was Dr. Lerna Yanik, Department of Political Science at Bilkent University for her study on "Beyond 'Bridges,' 'Crossroads' and 'Buffer Zones': Defining a New International Role for Turkey."
