EAST LANSING, Mich., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Over 500 representatives from state agencies, supportive housing agencies and continuum of care networks will be gathering today at The Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University for the 3rd Annual Michigan Summit on Ending Homelessness. The two day Summit will focus on Michigans 10-Year Plans to end homelessness which were originally created in 2006. In its 3rd year, the Summit will focus on implementing the 60 plans which were created to cover all 83 counties in Michigan in an effort to end homelessness by 2016.
The plans have been created and are set in place across Michigan to end homelessness it is now time to implement them, said Keith Molin, executive director of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority - the lead state agency for Michigans Campaign to End Homelessness. This Summit brings together the people and ideas to make ending homelessness in Michigan a reality. With the work being done at this Summit on such issues as Housing First Initiatives, Project Homeless Connect, Instant Access to Housing and Continuum of Care Coordination it puts all of the pieces together across the state and allows these organizations to step up and take the lead to end homelessness.
Also attending the Summit will be Philip F. Mangano, Executive Director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH). Appointed by President Bush in 2002, Mangano has created a powerful network of jurisdictions (cities and states) that have dedicated themselves to ending homelessness according to guidelines set out by the USICH. An energetic and entertaining speaker, Mangano is sure to start the Summit with some powerful stories.
Michigan has received two national awards in the past for the work of the Campaign to End Homelessness, being the only state in the nation to assemble a statewide strategy that encompasses all of the 83 counties with 60 individual plans in addition to the state level plans.
Also being distributed at the Summit will be the 2007 Benchmark Report which is the yearly data report for the homeless population in Michigan.
