Embarking upon an historic mission, the Commission on the Future for America's Veterans will conduct is first meeting next Thursday, Nov. 9, on Capitol Hill in Room 334 of the Cannon House Office Building, to discuss a "baseline issues report." The commission was established in September as an independent, analytical body in order to examine the needs of veterans 15 to 25 years in the future and develop comprehensive recommendations on how best to meet those needs. The commission will deliver its final report by Memorial Day 2008.
Appointed to serve on the commission are Everett Alvarez, Jr., Raymond Boland, Chad Colley, Ronald F. Conley, William M. Diefenderfer III, Kenneth Kizer, Susan Livingstone, Bryan E. Sharratt and Jo Ann Webb. In addition, Hon. Harry N. Walters, former VA Administrator, serves as a non-voting, managing commissioner.
Altarum Institute, a nationally-recognized nonprofit research institute, is supporting the work of the commission and will also perform independent research on major policy matters that the commission will consider. Further supporting the work of the commission is a National Advisory Board, which includes former VA Secretary Anthony J. Principi, former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta and others.
-----
The commission was created by the Veterans Coalition, a private, nonprofit organization founded in June 2006 by The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), AMVETS and Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). The coalition provides ongoing support for the work of the commission, but does not play a role in the commission's deliberations nor in determining its recommendations.
