WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- As the federal government has implemented new regulations requiring proof of citizenship for Medicaid, the issue of illegal immigrants and their children has emerged as a significant issue. The Center for Immigration Studies has analyzed both births to illegal immigrants and their use of Medicaid. Information on these and related topics can be found at the Center's web site: http://www.cis.org.
Among the information available from the Center:
-- CIS estimates that 400,000 children are born each year to illegal immigrant mothers in the United States.
-- CIS has estimates for births to illegals for all 50 states and for many counties.
-- Some two-thirds of illegal immigrants are estimated to lack health insurance, and 250,000 children born to illegal alien mothers are enrolled in Medicaid each year.
-- CIS estimates that one-fourth of households headed by illegal immigrants have a child enrolled in Medicaid.
-- CIS has estimates for Medicaid use rates in many of the top immigrant-receiving states, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, Arizona, New Jersey, Illinois, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, and Maryland.
-- Providing Medicaid to illegal immigrant households is estimated to cost the federal government and state governments $4-5 billion annually. Almost all of these costs are for the U.S.-born children of illegals. Figures do not include treatment for uninsured illegals and their children.
