HOUSTON, Oct. 31 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Let the People Vote, Houston (LPVH) -- the group that was instrumental in passing Houston's Taxpayers' Bill of Rights (TABOR Houston) in 2004 -- has mailed thousands of flyers to educate Houstonians on why they should vote against Proposition G (Prop G) on next week's ballot. Houston citizens will receive the latest mailing released today spelling out why passing Prop G would cause a significant increase in the property taxes. The mailer prints homeowners' actual property taxes for 2005.

Mayor White's claims that tax rates will not increase are misleading, as Houstonians' property taxes continue to skyrocket. Voters want lower property taxes not the standard elected- official double talk about tax rates.

"The debate about Prop G is about taxpayer protections that 242,697 voters approved in 2004. Mayor White has fought Houston's Taxpayers' Bill of Rights in the courts three times -- and lost. And now he is trying to trick us again," stated Bruce Hotze, LPVH treasurer and a Houston businessman. "Now the tax-and-spend politicians want to remove 50 percent of the revenues and 80 percent of the long-term debt from these taxpayer protections. Removing the revenues from the cap will eliminate the pressure to lower property taxes. Prop G will cause uncontrolled increases in our property taxes.

"Once again, the voice of the people must be heard and Houstonians must vote against Prop G to maintain taxpayer protections and control runaway property taxes. If not, people could face property tax payments higher than their mortgage payments; higher water and sewer rates; and out-of-control spending. Houston's water and sewer rates are the highest in any large city in the country," observed Hotze.

White has claimed that passing Prop G is essential to fight crime and maintain Houston's airport. "Voters should not be fooled by the mayor's double-speak," warned Hotze. "The airports are in healthy condition. Essential city services are not in danger. This debate is not about funding essentials, it is a question of who should control the growth of our government: the people who earn the money or the politicians who love to spend it."

LPVH is asking Houston voters to take an honest assessment of their income versus what they pay in property taxes and fees, and determine if they are getting their money's worth from the local government. "I believe most people will agree that we are already paying too much in property taxes, and it is important to realize that a vote against Prop G will mean millions of dollars in tax and fee refunds to the citizens," stated Hotze. "Simply put, a vote against Prop G will be a vote for the people and not for the politicians."
