Lifting the Double Burden: A Critical Review of Race and Gender, 1968-2008

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday, November 13, at 7 PM, the National Archives and the National Archives for Black Women's History, located at the National Park Service: Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site, will hold a discussion on the struggle of Black women entitled: "Lifting the Double Burden: A Critical Review of Race and Gender, 1968-2008: A Conversation on the Struggle of Black Women." This event will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building, which is located on the National Mall at Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW, and is fully accessible.

The 40 years since the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., provide a lens through which one can examine the impact of race and gender on the lives of African American women. Noted author, historian, and educator Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, Ph.D., will present an overview using Mary Church Terrell's statement, "The colored women of this country carry two heavy loadsthe burden of race as well as sex." A conversation will follow on the question "Does the 'double burden' remain a reality for two generations of women?" Distinguished panelists include Cheryl Janifer LaRoche, Ph.D., archaeologist and Professor of American Studies, University of Maryland, Denise Rolark-Barnes, publisher of the Washington Informer, and Avis A. Jones-DeWeever, Ph.D., Director of Research, Public Policy, and Information Center for African American Women at the National Council of Negro Women. This program is co-sponsored by the Afro-American History Society of the National Archives.
