PITTSBURGH, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At approximately 9:10 pm on Wednesday evening, October 15, The Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights will premiere one of the most significant lighting events ever seen in this country and the largest light projection of the festival with the lighting the Cathedral of Learning and the Stephen Foster Memorial.

This is the first of two designs on the Cathedral of Learning by the German design team Friedrich Foerster and Sabine Weissinger (aka CASA MAGICA) for ARTLUMIERE, and will appear on the Forbes Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard sides of the Cathedral of Learning as well as on the Stephen Foster Memorial. Each of the designs will run for approximately two weeks and are inspired by the Cathedral itself - both its historical Gothic architecture and its purpose. The result described by CASA MAGICA is "An expression of a holistic education comprised of both natural sciences and the humanities."
The Cathedral of Learning, under construction from the late 1920s through the 1930s, was created by dedicated Pittsburghers as a symbol and tribute to all who have made Pittsburgh a shining beacon in education, business and culture. It is the second-tallest schoolhouse educational building in the world at 535 feet.
The October 15 kick-off of the lighting of the Cathedral of Learning and Stephen Foster Memorial on immediately follows Squonk Opera's Astro-Rama -- a free performance that starts at 8:00pm at Schenley Plaza in Oakland.
With more than 20 lighting installation sites, the Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights is the largest light festival of its kind in the United States. Timed to coincide with the height of the visual and performance arts schedule, the Pittsburgh 250Festival of Lights goal is to get local residents and tourists into key cultural areas to enjoy not only the artistic lighting, but also the tremendous array of entertainment and culture in this region.
