ROSEMONT, Ill., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. R. Lynn White of Austin, TX, assumed the presidency of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons at the conclusion of the association's 90th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition in Seattle, Wash., September 16-21, 2008.

During his year as President, Dr. White will represent AAOMS on governmental, civic, business, educational and professional matters, and is planning to continue support for clinical research and advocacy. Noting that he has cherished his "lifetime of involvement with the specialty I have come to love and to which I have dedicated a significant portion of my life," Dr. White told the AAOMS House of Delegates that he will work with the AAOMS Board of Trustees and representatives from other dental and medical organizations to "support the future economic vitality and the broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery practice." Prior to assuming the presidency, Dr. White served one-year terms as President-Elect and Vice President of the AAOMS. He also served four years as the District V Trustee on the AAOMS Board of Trustees, representing oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. In addition to his work with the AAOMS, Dr. White has served as a member of the OMS Foundation Board of Directors and the Advisory Committee of the OMS National Insurance Company (OMSNIC). He is a past president of the Texas and Southwest Societies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and has been a member of the Advisory Committee to the Board of Health and a member of the Anesthesia Advisory Committee to the Board of Dental Examiners.

Dr. White earned his dental degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. A diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a fellow of AAOMS, Dr. White practices oral and maxillofacial surgery in Austin and San Marcos, TX.

More than 5,000 registrants, including oral and maxillofacial surgeons from around the world, attended the AAOMS Annual Meeting where they conducted association business, discussed surgical procedures, earned continuing education credits and met with dental industry suppliers. Saving Face | Changing Lives -- The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the professional organization representing more than 8,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States, supports its fellows' and members' ability to practice their specialty through education, research and advocacy. AAOMS fellows and members comply with rigorous continuing education requirements and submit to periodic office examinations, ensuring the public that all office procedures and personnel meet stringent national standards.
