WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) today issued the following statement regarding the Labor Department's announcement that the National Unemployment Rate has dropped to 4.4 percent. This number is the lowest it's been since May 2001.

"Today's announcement that the U.S. unemployment rate has plunged to 4.4 percent should be heralded from Wall Street to Main Street. Unemployment is now the lowest it's been in 5.5 years. In fact, it's lower than the average of the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Today, more people are working then ever before providing more paychecks to hardworking Americans.

"Just look at the numbers -- 6.8 million jobs added since 2003. That is 38 straight months of job growth. The stock market is up and breaking new heights every day. Unemployment is down to pre-9/11 levels. America's GDP continues to grow quarter after quarter. Hourly wages are up, and gas prices continue to go down.

"Nancy Pelosi will tell you this is a stalled economy, but it's her plan to raise taxes and end this record setting economy that will be stalled when voters return Republicans to the majority on Tuesday."
