WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature for Nov. 1 from the U.S. Census Bureau:
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1: TWO GREAT HORSES
Profile America - Wednesday, November 1st. One of the great match races in horse racing history took place on this day in 1938, at Baltimore's Pimlico track. The occasion was a long- delayed race between War Admiral and Seabiscuit. Heavily favored War Admiral was the larger of the two and was the reigning Triple Crown winner as well as horse of the year. Seabiscuit's regular jockey was injured and could not ride that day. Seabiscuit jumped to an early lead, but War Admiral caught up and the two horses raced side by side for almost a mile. Then, in the stretch, Seabiscuit pulled away and won by four lengths, showing the spirit that generated a recent best-selling book and movie. Today in the U.S., some 4-million people watch thoroughbred racing each year at tracks across the country. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at http://www.census.gov.
