WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature for Nov. 5 from the U.S. Census Bureau:
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5: NEW YORK CITY MARATHON
Profile America - Sunday, November 5th. More than 2.5-million spectators are expected to line the route today for the 37th annual New York City Marathon. They'll see 37-thousand athletes from all around the world, competing in what has become the best known marathon on the globe. The top male runner last year was from Kenya and the top female from Latvia. The first New York City Marathon was held in 1970, with just 55 runners crossing the finish line, cheered by an audience of one-hundred. The budget for the event was so tight that unused bowling trophies were recycled to present to the winners. Nearly 24-thousand young men and women compete in cross country events while in college, while across the nation some 23-million enjoy running and jogging. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at http://www.census.gov.
