NEW YORK, Nov. 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao received the National Urban League's National Public Service Award this evening at its 50th anniversary Equal Opportunity Day awards dinner in New York City. The annual awards dinner recognizes individuals and corporations who perpetuate the principle of equal opportunity and who exhibit leadership qualities that result in notable contributions to the cause of equal rights.

"The National Urban League and the Department of Labor share many common goals: a commitment to diversity, a passion for equal opportunity and a dedication to America's workers in a competitive world," said Secretary Chao.

In April, the National Urban League and the Department of Labor jointly announced the Gulf Coast Employment Initiative to help at-risk youth. Even more recently, the National Urban League took a leadership role in helping disadvantaged seniors through the Department of Labor's Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP.)

"The department and the Urban League work together on many partnerships that are producing results for America's workers and fighting discrimination," Secretary Chao said.

The National Urban League was established in 1910, and is the nation's oldest and largest community- based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Today, the National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates. There are over 100 local affiliates of the National Urban League located in 35 states and the District of Columbia providing direct services to more than 2 million people nationwide through programs, advocacy and research.
