Veterinarians Honored at 2008 Award Ceremonies

BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association held its 97th annual convention in Spokane Oct. 4. Several veterinarians were honored at WSVMA's award ceremonies.
Spokane veterinarian Bryan Hunter received Veterinarian of the Year. Dr. Hunter owns Hunter Veterinary Clinic and organized the "Bite Prevention Program" in the Spokane area.
Rick DeBowes, veterinary professor and Associate Dean for Veterinary Development and External Relations at Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, received the Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. DeBowes was recognized for his efforts in the Veterinary Leadership Experience Program at the veterinary college.
Patricia Talcott, veterinarian and toxicologist at the University of Idaho and WSU's veterinary college, earned WSU Faculty Member of the Year Award. Dr. Talcottwas recognized for her commitment to WSU veterinary students and veterinarians nationwide. She co-wrote "Small Animal Toxicology," now in its second edition.
Deb Cofer, a Licensed Veterinary Technologist for Edmonds Veterinary Hospital, received the Distinguished Veterinary Staff Award. She has been the hospital's current practice manager since 1998.
BankerScott Harvey earned the Allied Industry Partner Award. Harvey has passionately supported veterinary medicine at both Fortune Bank and now Kitsap Bank.
Emily Pieracci, senior WSU veterinary student, was honored for her commitment to WSVMA and organized veterinary medicine by the Student/Recent Graduate Award.
Meadow Hills Veterinary Center, Kennewick, received the President's Award for extraordinary service and care given to "Chocolate." Veterinarians Janine Swailes, Susan Thorson, Sabine Gerds, Carol Wilson and staff took in the severely injured stray Chesapeake Bay Retriever and coordinated care through WSU's veterinary college. Besides providing free care, medical imaging and vaccinations, Meadow Hills raised more than $25,000 in 48 hours for extensive surgery, hospitalization, treatment, and physical therapy. Excess funds were donated in "Chocolate's" honor to help other animals.
David Roen, a retired Clarkston veterinarian and author, received the Media Award. For more than 20 years, Dr. Roen wrote and illustrated a weekly column in the Lewiston Tribune, Lewiston, Idaho. One of his watercolors was featured on the cover of the April 15, 1990, issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and he is well-known for his children's book, Jingle Belle: The Christmas Cat.
Terry Teeple and Kathy Kube earned the Outstanding Service to the Veterinary Profession Award. Both provided instruction for more than 30 years at Pierce College's Veterinary Technician Program in Lakewood. Teeple, a veterinarian, retired as program director and instructor in June 2008. Kube, Licensed Veterinary Technologist, worked at the college for 32 years before retiring this June.
The WSVMA is a statewide, not-for-profit, professional organization for the benefit of veterinary medicine. The WSVMA has over 1,600 members, representing veterinarians, veterinary students and a broad spectrum of veterinary practice. The Association creates a strong practice community that provides education, representation and the sharing of ideas dedicated to advancing the science and art of veterinary medicine and its relationship to public health and agriculture.
